Fabio Orsi | Alessandra Guttagliere | Giardino forico n°1 – Napoli

    , ,
60 page deluxe artwork-photo book (cm 17x24) + 2xCD, ltd. 100 copies... The city has passed through us like a big wave of dust carried by the wind we found ourselves covered by debris, passing skeletons shadows of leaves, passages, spells, voices of pianos from the windows memories of places that live in several times ardours and fervours and odours we have immortalized them. We have brought the simulacra with us we have watched them from the Estrada Atlantica, from the singing pits of Salento, from the immense Metrosideros of Monserrate with the organ of a church in the Itria Valley, from our home in one year of work the Giardino Forico appeared it behaves like life, it brings it appropriates the airs, the colours, the languages and the ways it does not represent it shows its vigour which is our own. The Giardino Forico is a way of giving back a place, a knowledge, a humanity through our languages. It is the result of a vital artistic process, we listen and observe the space and we speak it.

Kate Carr – I Ended Out Moving To Brixton

A soundscape reveals a lot about a place, through its presences, its silences, its rhythms and its pauses. A soundscape is forever being made by us all. It stitches us together in ways both subtle and sometimes overwhelming. I think in both its openness and fragility the soundscape can reveal something about the process of community making, and its sensitivity to change offers both opportunities and risks. Kate Carr, Brixton, London.

    Compilation of Iranian experimental music

Faced with the task of writing about artists from Iran it is tempting to oversimplify and go with the easiest way to address them -- the way most western media has always treated art coming not just from Iran but from middle east in general. This approach places artists exclusively within the political context presented by the mainstream media, and only shows you the day-to-day politics of governments in the region. This biased approach means artists' works are only interpreted in relation to a reduced conception of the political context. By seeing things this way you only have a handful of artists addressing certain issues with enough exaggeration to be newsworthy.

Michael Vallera – All Perfect Days

On All Perfect Days, Michael Vallera’s second LP for Denovali, he continues to distill his singular, cinematic approach to sound. Acting as both performer and producer, Vallera constructs a lush, deeply emotional album that jettisons the overt rhythms and explicit drum programming that characterized much of his earlier work. Instead, in its tightly focused reliance on little more than guitar and amplifier feedback, supplemented by piano and synthesizer, the album explores a sparse but rich palette that evokes the ambient works of Harold Budd—although filtered through Vallera’s own sharp-edged sensibility. Recorded with Greg Norman at Electrical Audio and mastered by Daniel Rejmer, All Perfect Days adds to the mounting evidence that Michael Vallera is among the most assured and compelling artists to emerge from Chicago in recent years. Michael Vallera is a musician and photographer who lives and works in Chicago. Prolific as both a solo artist and collaborator, he has released albums under his own name and as COIN (Opal Tapes), with percussionist Steven Hess as Cleared (Immune Recordings), and with Joseph Clayton Mills as Maar (Umor Rex, Entr’acte). He sings and plays guitar in the experimental rock group Luggage (Don Giovanni Records). An MFA graduate of School of the Art Institute of Chicago, his work has been exhibited in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and elsewhere.

Sankt Otten – Zwischen Demut und Disco

The duo Sankt Otten from Osnabrueck (Germany), founded in 1999 and consisting of Stephan Otten and Oliver Klemm, releases music on Denovali since 2009. After Männerfreundschaften und Metaphysik (2016), a collaboration record with experimental guitarist „N“, Sankt Otten finally release their first new album since Engtanz Depression (2015). Their new record starts with Das endgültige Scheitern der Melancholie (en.: the final failure of melancholy), which seems to be unfamiliar due to its euphoric mood, but also shows that Sankt Otten consequently develop their music in a sovereign way. The title track Zwischen Demut und Disco (en.: Between humility and disco) then particularly brings to the fore the duo’s admiration of analog synthesizers - timeless instrumental music without nostalgic flashbacks to the past. Warm electronica, human being and machine hand in hand, infused by an almost danceable beat who induces head-nodding.

    Nadia Struiwigh – WHRRu

"WHRRu" combines the warm electronics and dynamic sound of Nadia's previous works with a new film-composing orientated cinematic sound and approach. The result is a ten tracks album with electronic listening music for quiet nights and long journeys. Nadia says: '"WHHRu" is written with emotions and memories from my childhood. The use of acoustic instruments and synthesizers gave me the opportunity to settle a past/ future concept for all the chapters. Birds Of Passage – The Death of Our Invention

Masterworks of minimalism and glacial beauty. With Birds of Passage, New Zealand based Alicia Merz presents us with an endearing invitation into her fragile world, a captivating journey through the landscapes of her emotional euphoria and agony, a further commitment to musical experimentation. The cold minimalist-drones, distorted field recordings, and sparse instrumentation, illustrate an icy, desolate and dark world. With allusions to dark-pop and classic broken-folk, the reverb drenched instrumentation, metaphorical fairytale lyrics, and anti-climactic compositions remind us that Alicia Merz is a singer songwriter for people who don't like singer songwriters. After four years of silence, Merz returns with the fourth full length 'The Death of Our Invention'.

Terminal Sound System – The Endless Sea

From Rebirth and a four track recorder in the year 1999 to broken tape machines, untuned guitars/synths and extreme signal processing an eternity later, Terminal Sound System has remained the primary musical outlet for musician/producer Skye Klein. It is about stories. There is a narrative, albeit disjointed. Tends to come in threes, like dramatic characters; introduction, exploration, disintegration. It’s about stories, creating a world with sound and words and exploring that until it (inevitably) folds back on itself and starts to self-reference, decay, but also sprout appendages, potentialities.

    Barry Kernachan – Layers

Layers is a collection of piano pieces by Barry Kernachan. The improvised nature in which Kernachan composes has delivered a relaxed and free-flowing album without control or restraint. “Playing the piano for me is a form of meditation. A piece just starts with a single note or simple melody. I try not to control anything and just let the idea flow,” says Kernachan. “This, for me, is an important part of composing – my ideas are born in this way rather than being predetermined.”

    Nanook of the North

Nanook of the North are Stefan Wesołowski and Piotr Kaliński (also known as Hatti Vatti) - two acclaimed Polish musicians whose simpatico merging of compositional roles are blended as seamlessly as their use of acoustic and electronic sounds. Recording sessions broadly found Stefan playing violin and piano parts with additional synth touches and Piotr taking care of electronics, more synths and the final mix. Upon being invited by the Sopot Film Festival next to their hometown of Gdansk to perform an improvised score to a film screening, the duo chose Robert J. Flaherty’s classic 1922 silent movie of the same name - ‘Nanook of the North’. Keen to maintain and nurture the initial ambient essence of the film, the duo travelled to Iceland where they recorded the album in Reykjavík and later mixed it in Greenland.

While the first two albums featured only instrumental tracks, "Facades" are the first two pieces in which Orson Hentschel works with text as a main musical element for his composition, although he approaches vocals from a rather particular perspective.

Far Away Music sees Benjamin Louis Brody reimagine his previous compositions to create what he calls “music inside of music”. “When I started this project, I asked myself whether I could give my music depth perception, similar to a painting or drawing – the classic illusion of train track perspective that gives a painting a certain sense of distance,” says Brody. “With Far Away Music, I set out to do that with sound.” “The music and sounds you hear could only have been created through computer technology. By manipulating the speed and texture its allowed me to change the perspective of the original content,” says Brody. “Far Away Music represents how I experience my work in a more personal way – it’s vast and subconscious.”

I usually got all the tape out and started cutting and pasting them, hoping to find that one special loop that carries serenity and contemplation. In this search I found loops that suggested slow static movements, like ships slowly crumbling through seas of static. They fitted perfectly with my experiences of seeing certain paintings at that time, that's how the concept of this album was born. I took certain paintings as examples and created the sounds based on what I was seeing and hearing in the frame.

    Orla Wren – Soil Steps

Following swiftly on from 2013’s ‘Book Of The Folded Forest’ (Home Normal) and 'The Blizzard That Birthed Her' (Facture) the new Orla Wren album ‘Soil Steps’ finds the ever itinerant tui divesting himself from his usual cadre of musical collaborators and travelling, solo, into the Spanish wilderness with a tent and a portable recorder. Recorded during months of wandering isolation in the Iberian fastness, a process only concluded when our hapless traveller contrived to break an ankle (high in the Sierra Nevada and minus any painkillers, a logical point at which to call time), ‘Soil Steps’ shifts focus from the enveloping ruminations of ‘Folded Forest’ to the more Spartan and spacious tones of the field recording discipline. Orla Wren devotees will not be disappointed, as tui refines and reduces his atomistic approach to composition in order to reveal its luminous essence. Inspired by and taken almost entirely from the natural sounds emanating from his chosen environment; recordings of insects, snakes, street musicians, the movement of warm wind through bamboo on a dry river bed and broken only by Eva Puyuelo’s occasional narration of tui's words (suggestive that a handful of thoughts could last all day). Creating, in the studio environment, a rich tapestry from the collected sounds, thoughts and feelings of the journey, tui conjures a music that is not at all lonely yet is profoundly alone.

    Guiseppe Cordaro – 45°12′N 72°54′E

    ,
Made by hand... Hand made book-bound covers (1260 g/qm FSC certified), lined inside with luxury Italian paper from Florence, sealed with washi tape, glass mastered CD (not CDR), antique glass slide (circa. 1910-1955), 5 x embryology prints, insert from antique embryology book, dried lavender, dried herbs, scent. All rests inside stitched glassine bags. Individually numbered / tagged / sealed. Made with love... Arising out of a womb-like, silent void comes Guiseppe Cordaro’s 45°12′N 72°54′E, blinking into life and exploring the cyclical lineage of a new birth, a recent ending, and the never-ending flow of life’s river. Water both sustains life and erodes it. Like the crumbling and disfigured coastlines, she either laps against the throat or chokes it, providing nourishment or eating away at the body, either satiating a deep thirst and keeping organisms alive or discovering a grisly penchant for murder in death by way of drowning. Barriers barely hold back Cordaro’s roiling waves of modular synth, a thrusting, unstoppable power rolling around in the pit of the music, capable of collapsing sounds, but also capable of reshaping their architecture.

James A. McDermid – Tonal Glints

"This album is dedicated to my sister, Harriet, who died in August 2016. Throughout the 2 years she was ill - leading up to her death - I had started writing music as a way to privately articulate what I was feeling. After she'd passed away, there was the question around what to do with the many tracks I had written; they had, in all honesty, been written for her. For me to perhaps leave them sitting on a hard-drive seemed a disappointing end to what amounted to, in my mind, a tribute to her. About 6 months later, I was fortunate enough to be offered a 25 track album release (titled Ghost Folk) though Canadian label, Polar Seas Recordings, in April 2017. Her death is the worst thing that's ever happened to me; once the original shock dissipated, a wall of grief fell on me and, as a result, I found it an almost impossible task seeing my world in quite the same way as I once had. The wear and tear of life became suffocating, so I continued with the idea of channeling what I was feeling, into music; however, coming to terms with Harriet's death, rather than her illness, started to cloud and confuse what I was doing. In the end, it was Sophie Calle's book Exquisite Pain - a book arguably about grief in its various forms - that provided me with the clarity I needed. Calle's writing - in particular the people in it trying to come to terms with their own similar tragedies - helped shape and direct my own thoughts; Exquisite Pain acted as a conduit for what I was both feeling and trying to convey. Tonal Glints is the end result." - James A. McDermid

Zuydervelt / Belorukov / Aquarius – The Red Soul

Comes in a matt finish digipack... After making several films without music, director Jessica Gorter went for a different approach for her recent film ‘The Red Soul’. Rutger Zuydervelt (aka Machinefabriek) was brought in to make the soundtrack for the documentary. They quickly agreed that the score needed to be very subtle, and not cliché-driven or overdramatic. An old bakelite record with a speech from Stalin and a few old LPs with Soviet songs became the starting point for the music. Fragments of these were sampled, transformed and combined with the saxophone of Ilia Belorukov and percussion by René Aquarius (of Dead Neanderthals). The result is a series of textural and tonal collages that evokes a sense of decay as well as (false) nostalgia, perfectly fitting the theme of the film. On the soundtrack album, the various parts of the score are assembled to be heard as one seamless piece - as a story in itself. The Red Soul was selected for the prestigious IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) International and Dutch Competitions.

Aaron Martin & Machinefabriek – Seeker

In 2012, choreographer Iván Pérez asked me to work on a score for a dance piece of his, Hide And Seek. And to do this in collaboration with the great Aaron Martin. I don't think he knew at that point that Aaron and I had been working together previously (on Cello Drowning, an EP released on Type in 2007). Living in the US, Aaron started recording parts and sending them to Iván and me. Then I would use his recordings to build the score with; processing them, editing them, adding sounds, etcetera. The tracks on the Seeker album are basically (the refined versions of) the first sketches we made, trying out how our sounds would blend, and what directinos and atmospheres could be used in the dance performance. After this, these tracks were morphed into one long collage, tailored to the choreography. This final score is added to the album as a digital bonus.

    Machinefabriek – Becoming

Becoming is the fourth dance piece by Dutch/Spanish choreographer Iván Pérez to feature an original soundtrack by Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek). After ‘Hide & Seek’, ‘Attention the doors are closing’, and ‘Exhausting Space’, the duo sharpened their collaboration with a new piece by having the music performed live on stage for the first time. The choreography and music were created simultaneously, rehearsing together, and developing a movement and sound ‘vocabulary’ for the piece. The end result is structured, but still leaves a lot of room for improvisation in order to keep a natural flow. Each performance is different, with the musician and the dancers (Wei Yun Chen, Majon van der Schot, and Christopher Tandy) having a real-time dialogue.

Aaron Martin – A Room Now Empty

Aaron Martin’s album "A Room Now Empty" sees him returning to the memory-based recordings of previous albums such as "Almond", "River Water" and "Chautauqua", where layered meanings in the music and titles don’t allow a single clear-cut reading of the music. “A Room Now Empty is similar to the concept of Day Has Ended where Christoph Berg and I created music to encompass the passing of a day, but stretched out for the passing of a lifetime or at least a portion of a lifetime,” says Aaron. Using cello, electric guitar, bass, roll up piano, banjo, concertina, acoustic guitar, voice, ukulele, singing bowls and lap steel, "A Room Now Empty" keeps the same intimacy and directness of Aaron’s previous albums, with a slightly more processed sound creating distance within the music.

Ian Hawgood & Giulio Aldinucci – Consequence Shadows

'Consequence Shadows' marks the first collaboration between Ian Hawgood and Giulio Aldinucci after years of development. Initially getting to know each other when Giulio released 'Tarsia' on Ian's Nomadic Kids Republic label back in 2011, the two have become firm friends and have continued to work on music together steadily since. 'Consequence Shadows' was initially termed 'snow sketches' as they shared files back and forth between Giulio's home in Italy and Ian's homes in Japan, the UK, and now Poland in this time. This working name for each piece (each noted as parts 1 to 5 in their correspondence) has lent heavily to the overall feel, highlighting the imbued sense of fragility in the subtle melodies as they evolve through the field-recorded white noise frequencies throughout. Whilst 'Consequence Shadows' will no doubt be (rightly) marked as an ambient work, the pieces stretch genre definitions as they converse with submerged beats, freckled frequencies, guitar echoes, direct vocal studies, and sustained piano chords, among many other directions. The closing piece is the nearly twenty minute beautifully epic reworking of 'Other Ashes' by Belgian artist Stijn Hüwels.

The very nature of the long form piece promotes deep solitude and rest, a quiet evening in with only the music and the ghostly company of these two treasured artists. It not only deserves but needs to be played in its entirety. It’s continuity encourages a one-sitting–listen, and only then is its beauty truly revealed.

    Sonmi451 – Panta Rei

Sonmi451 is Bernard Zwijzen, creating his own blend of atmospheric ambient music from the city of Hasselt Belgium. His music is perhaps best described as a hybrid between subtle, shimmering electronica and delicate soundscapes. Every Sonmi451 track is a sort of mini-universe where field-recordings and lovingly crafted samples are combined with carefully chosen atmospheric ambiences. Sonmi451 likes to explore the inner aspects of sound and stillness, the cracks and loopholes that exist between sounds. "This album is dedicated to the rivers and streams, crossing the exquisite mountain-landscape of the Alps and Dolomites in the beautiful region of Southern Tirol." Bernard Zwijzen

    Deison | Mingle – Innersurface

After crossing wastelands lost in oblivion (Everything Collapse[d], Aagoo, 2014), and being skeptically moved by listening to pulsations of a weak life (Weak Life, Aagoo, 2015), Cristiano Deison and Andrea Gastaldello (aka Mingle) are arriving at their final destination, Innersuface, the last stop on their journey. They suddenly fall into a hole and are trapped in a slimy pit overflowing with mud and industrial liquids. Everything is dense and oppressive. Their physical movement stops, the chaos in their head remains, they look around and everything is irreversibly changed. And while looking at the road they have just walked along, they glimpse the edge of a forest brimming with life, with its appearance unchanged over time...will it stay like this forever? Created, recorded and mixed between December 2015 and April 2016, at Mingle's Tower Home Studio and Deison's 1st Floor Studio, Innersurface continues the perfect blend of Deison and Mingle sounds: drones, field recordings and processed loops superimposed with disturbed rhythms, distorted beats and electronic processing. As always, the electronics are dirty and extremely evocative, sounds that we have become accustomed to.

    Vetropaco – Subvoid

On "Vetropaco"'s second album, we see once again Gianluca Favaron (Zbeen, Ab'SHE, etc.) and Andrea Bellucci (Red Sector A, Nerva, Dio<X>ide, etc.) joining their forces. The target of this new work is to further expand the concepts and themes touched upon in the first album, making this collaboration as homogeneous as possible. In "Subvoid", Favaron's sounds act like the main binding force on all the tracks and appear to be more in the foreground compared to the previous album. The project is enriched by new solutions where digital and analogue sounds melt together, searching for a form of expression that is both pleasant and engaging, and never taken for granted. Rhythm tracks take shape from Favaron's palette, whose sounds are bended and elaborated exactly to form a unique blend with Bellucci's textures, where they get lost and come to light again.

In "Absequence", Padoan's devastating Rhythmic-Noise meets, merges and blends with Bellucci's polished IDM-Techno Ambient, giving life to nine tracks of pure electronic delirium. Tatiana Alamartine – Searching

Digipack CD Album with 2 Bonus Tracks included... The first of a new series named Acoustic Collection at VoxxoV Records. The creation of the album Searching began in the Conservatorio di Musica Giovan Battista Martini in Bologna, Italy, during a six month residence in 2014. The rest was done in two months in Lyon. Tatiana Alamartine worked with a famous Bosendörfer piano, a rare and prestigious Viennese instrument. This piano is unique and has a powerful and melodious tone. The pianist Rainer Keuschnig will even say that "Bösendorfer is authentically Viennese, because it presents all the various aspects of the Viennese personality which expresses itself in the eye which smiles or cries". This famous piano was the one used by numerous famous composers, including, Franz Liszt and Charlemagne Palestine for his album Strumming Music. Tatiana's album follows the tradition of solo piano albums with wintry tones while also having a colored and warm composition at the same time. Classical music lovers who liked Vora by Rauelsson or Winter Musik by Nils Frahm will surely be delighted with Searching by Tatiana Alamartine. The themes’ diversity makes this album complex yet approchable. In many ways, this album sounds like a collection of compositions mixing improvisations and interludes, a brilliant achievement of a three years musical ressearch diary.

Comes housed in LCR's a lovely hand-printed letterpress packaging with CD wrap and digital collage cover by K. Craig... Many listeners to Westberg’s solo recordings have noted the depth and subtlety of his compositions and these four tracks are no exception. They have a rare ability to echo both the clarity of minimalism and the maximal intensity of the best overdriven rock bands. Opening track ‘Andrea F’ is a case in point, moving from clashing overtones to an almost-choral central section before introducing pitched bass tones that move the track into a new realm. There are moments elsewhere that have an unsettling quality, but the patience and care taken with the sounds ensures the album as a whole retains a warm humanity rather than moving into alienating territories. Fundamentally, there is always a lightness of touch to Westberg’s compositions.

    Bill Seaman – The Epiphanies

    ,
The Epiphanies sees Bill Seaman in fine fettle, driving along phosphorescent-lit roads marked by the heavy dew of mystery and slow-to-develop intrigue. Delayed secrets are now only coming to light. The setting sun is the glorious backdrop as The Epiphanies coasts along a deserted road, its dark road-trip music glinting like the lightless, metallic chrome of the car’s body. A pack of coyotes come out to play, and further down the road some lusty, post-jazz musings at a local bar hint at dark dislocations. Nothing is right – the neon sign is too bright and things are a little off-kilter. Reality slips slowly away, like water through the fingers, drained as if from the last bottle of whiskey, until it can’t be grasped at any longer. The sick, cloying perfume of cigarette smoke hangs in the air like a tired apparition. The lingering, too-wide smile of a cute bartender with a string of strange tattoos along her back and an old episode of Tiny Toon Adventures (circa 1990) rather than the latest game from the NHL graces the television’s pulpit, adding to the subtle sense of dislocation, and the music only gets darker, its dying light duelling with the fading sunset. The headlights are a lonely splash of colour at two in the morning, and as the music enters the long hours a velvet-smooth carpet of asphalt spreads out before the listener, the unfolding ambient textures helping to shape a smooth, virgin-pure road. Dark wet trees and swaying branches are illuminated as the car drives through an eerie, sleeping town, with nothing but a slumping, somnambulant piano strolling up and down the dark, leaf-strewn sidewalk. Distant notes seem to croon into the space, somehow filtering in through the dead radio that needed replacing months ago, luring you into its monochromatic musical world. You are the first visitor. You are also the last. There isn’t any other traffic…

    Ghost and Tape – Vár

Heine Christensen (the man behind the ‘ghost and tape’ moniker) and I have been friends for a number of years now, and I’ve been a fan ever since I discovered his first self-titled release for Akira Kosemura’s superb Schole label quite randomly in a record store in Tokyo while admiring the artwork. I ended up buying this based on the art alone, and immediately went back the next day to buy the only other album I could find by him, ‘Home’. The music of ghost and tape is deeply intricate, and so careful is he in the work he does, this marks only his fourth studio album since his debut back in 2010. I’ve always admired people who take their time with their music for they appreciate the finer details and seem to understand music as a timeless quantity. This is a sadly rare quality now as things come and go, but in line with Home Normal’s ethos is a belief that truly lasting music must in its very nature have a certain timelessness that transcends whatever maybe ‘in’ at a particular moment in time.

    Steven Kemner – Gradation Movements

    ,
You can’t predict the weather. Sometimes, life throws something at you. When it does – not if but when - hopes and expectations lie like shattered spokes. Is it fate, destiny, or circumstance? No one knows, but paths can change when there’s a sudden shift in the weather, and something that once seemed so sure and stable starts to become the opposite: uncertain and unfair. Promises peter out as a drop of rain appears. You have to stop and change course. A natural disaster plunges normality into desolation, and the same is true of our longed-for futures which so often disappear into the ether. Disappointment ensures: inclement weather. You can’t prepare for it; the hurricane warning arrived too late. Steven Kemner recently went through such a change: “I needed to move away from everything that I loved to a place I had no desire to go. This change complicated music, life and a sense of belonging”. - Steven Kemner Like the changing of the weather, ironclad clouds can appear from out of nowhere, eclipsing the sun with blackened totality, and the deep, roiling textures within the music of Gradation Movements are full of rain and turmoil, of leaving and moving on. The slow swells and hard-fought movements are indicative of clouded spells which obdurately block out the blue hope of the sky like a cruel shield. Coated in sleek silver, the notes shadow the steps of the people below. Rainy season stalks the soul; it doesn’t seem to matter where the notes walk, because the cloud always follows, indiscriminate with its downpours of rain and its trident spears of lightning. Rainfall is needed in order to grow, and that includes us. The rainy spells can make us stronger, helping us to rise up in troubling times…but too much of it, and we drown. The cirrus patterns and the cycling of the wind may be hard to understand – we may never understand – but they still have a purpose. The purpose may seem obscure, but it’s there. There’s a strong energy at work within them, and troubled times often reveal things that, in hindsight, we later come to appreciate. When sunlight fails, the music’s tones lie hidden in a shroud of slow mist. The clouds don’t always disperse. You can’t predict the future - you just have to roll with it until you finally come to terms with the strange weather.

Bruno Sanfilippo – Lost & Found

Lost & Found is the latest album from Sanfilippo. The artist takes four songs that were once buried and lost in other collections, curating them together to create a new sound and feel. This reimagination allows the listener to discover each piece, as if for the first time. The songs have the power to pull memories from us, of either real or imagined experience and the ethereal sounds are, at once, familiar and an exploration. This transformation invites the listener to experience Lost & Found as an act of losing and finding something again.

Max Ananyev – The Way to the Ocean

"I wanted the music to immediately immerse the listener in a new state, but without relying on all the usual techniques composers often make use of in the ambient acoustic genre,” says Max. “In the measured style of my playing, I’ve tried to put across the core idea of the ambient genre – a change in the listener’s state, the transition from thought to contemplation and the perception of time.” "Max Ananyev keeps things to the essentials on the subdued intimate moods of “The Way to the Ocean”. Arrangements possess a meditative quality to them ... The usage of silence further adds to the appeal of the album..." – Beach Sloth

Adrian Lane – Playing With Ghosts

On his album "Playing With Ghosts", Adrian Lane uses 100-year-old cylinder recordings as the starting point for new compositions – chopping them up, reordering them and playing along to build up a series of completely new compositions. “I’ve always liked the idea of collage and often include this in my visual art,” says Adrian. “So I wanted to do something that incorporated this approach in my music.”

    Ales Tsurko – Microscale

Created in real-time from random Wikipedia articles, "microscale" is a web-based, generative album. Each Wikipedia article functioning as a step sequencer – where the letters are the sequencer steps and the track titles are regular expressions that switch the steps on and off. The web version is generated in real-time and is also hackable – this means that the regular expressions, samples, tempo and other parameters can be edited or replaced – enabling "microscale" to be used as an instrument and sequencer for the listener’s own music.
