    Hotel Neon – Context

    ,
Pre-Order: Release Date 01.05.17 Two tone / 4 panel hand made letter-pressed Somerset cotton covers, glass mastered CD, set of ten prints by Nieves Mingueza pressed on luxury 250g gesso card, antique (1890-1940) photograph that has been hand distressed to hold a secret message; hold to the light and all will be revealed! A set of hand numbered vintage negative prints; one black & white photo and one film slide. All of the above rests inside stitched / sealed glassine bags with patchouli scent. In the spirit of honoring the power of contextual cues and lenses on the musical translation process between artist and listener, Hotel Neon set about the task of creating an album as open to context as possible. This is a theme we had previously explored with other projects (i.e. “Forms” by The Sound Of Rescue), but never with so much awareness and personal experience driving the endeavor. “Context” is an intentionally minimal experience and although the intensity of the tracks ebbs and flows, it is equally at home in the background and foreground. This is an album ready to be enjoyed and appreciated in any circumstance or setting, and we await the interpretations. - HN

    Aldinucci / M. Gri – Segmenti

Limited edition: elegant handmade sleeve with cover album in polaroid format inside the eco packaging… Segmenti is the first album born in 2016 by the artistic collaboration between Giulio Aldinucci and Francis M. Gri. A strong emotional work recorded in a difficult year that has definitely influenced the creative process of the five songs. Earthquakes, terrorist attacks, social fractures, walls, hatred, fear, are tragic events that have certainly shaped the sound of this album. An hypnotic and pulsating sound that combines two different styles naturally balanced in “Segmenti”. Ambient textures and field recordings, piano and guitar are the instruments that the two musicians have used to give rise to an unrelenting flow of kaleidoscopic sound suggestions.

Federico Mosconi – Colonne Di Fumo

Limited edition: elegant handmade sleeve with cover album in polaroid format inside the eco packaging... 8 undefined and changing soundscapes as the figures drawn by the smoke, columns of sound to create illusory structures, expanded spaces, eclipsed images to re-emerges transfigured. Sporadic noises of objects and nature seem to suggest the listener a reading key, but it is a moment, not enough to create a sharp image. Only Imagination takes shape, and if the viewer will surrender to the flow it will be part.

    Scott Sherk – Alentejo

"The Alentejo of Portugal is a sparsely populated area of gentle savannah with cork oak and ancient olive trees.  It has been inhabited since Metholithic times, and is rich in prehistoric stone sites.  Sitting quietly beneath an oak tree one imagines that not much has changed over time. We were lucky to be residents of The Obras Foundation. It is a special place beautifully situated on a hillside overlooking pastures, tangled gorges, orchards, and a distant castle.  There is little sound—except the wind.  It is a place to clear your head and regain the ability to listen to the world around, as well as the landscape within. I walked through the dry, dusty fields, mesmerized by their stillness, except for the wind.  When the wind came, it swept across the fields in waves that the dry grass made visible.  I was excited by the tangible experience of the space around me.  I could see it, feel it and hear it. As I was making recordings, Pat Badt was painting notes of color.  Taken by the intensity of the light and the endless sky, she painted many, many paper sketches of color and form...

Sound Meccano – Salty Wind / Inner Fire

Sound Meccano is an alias of Rostislav Rekuta, a seasoned sound designer and field recordist from Riga, Latvia, who's been making electronic, electroacoustic and ambient music since 1999, most often - in collaborations with various local musicians. While this name might not yet ring a loud bell worldwide and the number of records released till now has been sparse, it was definitely not because of lack of quality or work put into the music. In fact, it's the opposite, and hopefully the recent string of releases might change that. Continuing the collaboration with the fellow ambient guitarist Jura Laiva (whose alias is a pun on his first name and words in Latvian, and which loosely translates as Sea Boat), first documented on 2 recent EPs on Crónica and Flaming Pines, Sound Meccano presents the first full-length album of this configuration.

    Andrew Tasselmyer – Resonant Moments

Handmade artwork, each hand numbered. Different colored wallets with envelopes.  Wallets 250g paper, outside cover envelope 120g paper, transparent bag... Looking back on the past year – the most fulfilling of my life – I find particular truth in Benjamin’s eloquent description of the power of resonant memories to transcend time and context. My reflection doesn’t reveal frozen, sequential timestamps; rather, these experiences live, breathe, and resonate even more today than they did when they occurred. Time collapses. - AT Similarly, this album is my necessary attempt to distill individual sights, sounds, and feelings from December 2015 – October 2016 into a tangible collection. Field recordings capturing particularly Resonant Moments across the US, Canada, China, India, and the Caribbean were injected into the most honest reflections I could compose.

    Snufmumriko – At First Light

Professionally manufactured high quality CDr's, limited to 40 copies. Handmade artwork, each hand numbered. Brown kraft wallets with envelopes. Wallets 250g paper, outside cover envelope 120g paper, transparent bag... One of the themes of this album is, I would say, dawn, new beginnings, taking the first steps on a new journey and so on, and many of the sounds used on it were recorded early in the morning. Several feature water, be it rain or a gently burbling forest stream. The recorded sounds were then processed in various ways to create soundscapes which hopefully have something of the life and organic feel of nature in them. A commentator online once described my Snufmumriko music as ”soundscape cloth woven from field recordings” or something along those lines, and i think that’s an apt description. There’s also an almost spiritual dimension to these tracks, and I was often in a very introspective mood as I created them. - SM

    øjeRum – Naar Vi Vaagner

Professionally manufactured high quality CDr's, limited to 60 copies.  Handmade artwork, each hand numbered. Different color wallets with envelopes.  Wallets 250g paper, outside cover envelope 120g paper, transparent bag... The next level of øjeRum sound comes into full bloom on Hvid Hvile Sort Ro and Naar Vi Vaagner, still rooted in the same melancholic minimalist hypnotic repetition, but here it takes on a more dynamic styling, a more nuanced character, a more profound close listening experience, neatly connecting the dots within the correlated set of William Basinski, Brian Eno, Greg Gorlen, Tim Hecker and Skittish Arm, as øjeRum applies his fragmented folk modus operandi to his long form ambient noir outlet, yielding two striking collected works that are more immediately engrossing than his more involved epics He Remembers There Were Gardens (his alternate soundtrack to the film La Jette) and Syrenen while remaining just as potent and immersed. Highest possible recommendation. - PSI LAB

    David Kolhne – Granular Canvas

Each highly limited collectable Whitelabrecs release is built around a set format as follows: 50 x vinyl-effect CDrs with card vinyl-style sleeves, rubber stamped titling and a polaroid print of the cover artwork. Typically, Kolhne’s work is structured from soft and hard synth recordings along with recordings of his custom-built instruments, transformed into carefully assembled environments of micro sound. ‘Granular Canvas’ is no different as it sets off on a journey through some 54 minutes of carefully formulated Ambient paintings. However, they are not so much pictures or paintings as they are colour washes, as deep strokes of blue, grey and green dominate the palette. Such tones evoke a sort of sea-spray shade and as you listen, you will be struck by a suggestion of pressure yet somehow, a sense of relaxation. The sounds have the power to both immerse and sooth as you take your own thoughts and ideas to them each listen, day or night, rain or shine. Kolhne works completely free from concept however, particularly within Granular Canvas as he strips away all narrative in favour of allowing the sounds, noises and tones a voice in which to tell a story. A blank canvas, if you will.

    Net – HS

Each highly limited collectable Whitelabrecs release is built around a set format as follows: 50 x vinyl-effect CDrs with card vinyl-style sleeves, rubber stamped titling and a polaroid print of the cover. HS is an album full of gentle granular textures that weighs in generously at 55 minutes and is pristinely mastered by Fraser McGowan, who suggested that Edward approached Whitelabrecs as a home for the project. HS is a sort of spiritual successor to RS which was released in 2012, with both records being dedications to Edward’s maternal grandparents. In fact, opening track ‘Ptarmigan’ includes a sample of his grandmother singing back in the 1940s. Aside from this, HS is free from a set concept as the net traps and envelopes many of Edward’s unrelated experiences and ideas during the album’s creation: 'Plaza' was inspired by the overwhelming metropolis of the planet Trantor in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. 'Werel' is an attempt to capture the beauty, stillness and vast, textured summer evening skies of the Rauhaniemi beach in Tampere. In the summer of 2014, several days before the birth of their son, Edward and his wife Annika chanced upon a nestling bird helpless on the pavement in an old red-brick industrial area of Tampere. Unsure from where it had fallen, they took it in and kept it fed overnight. The next day, they located the nest in the wall and returned the chick safely. This bird is the fellow that can be heard chirping in 'Nestling'.

José Silva – Modulated Tones No.1

Each highly limited collectable Whitelabrecs release is built around a set format as follows: 50 x vinyl-effect CDrs with card vinyl-style sleeves, rubber stamped titling, a polaroid print of the cover artwork housed inside a plastic case to keep it looking mint. Ink, font style and sleeve colours will vary for each release, chosen by the artist. The cinematic starting point gave birth to the album’s photographic concept as José found himself regularly surveying his VSCO feed of images. Modulated Tones No.1: Music For Framed Works is a soundtrack for surveying a photographic collection to provide a space for a slow introspective processing of the shots, as thoughts or memories flicker in your mind. This will be a personal experience from one listener to the next and is the ideal environment for this album to be consumed.

Selffish – He She Them Us

CD edition of He She Them Us. Housed in a 4 page Digipak with clear tray and sleeve printed on reverse for a tactile matt finish. He She Them Us is an album of precise, purposeful electronica that recalls and expands upon the output of labels like Mille Plateaux, April Records, raster-noton and City Centre Offices in the early 2000s. The music is not purely electronic though, atop the bursts of static and staccato beats are many layers of field recordings and live instrumentation. The field recordings represent an important anchor point for Andrejs whose work on He She Them Us began at a very turbulent time in his life. Finding solace in the stillness and beauty of the countryside around his home city of Riga, he would record the sounds of these places and return with them to his home studio: "Each time I went to visit a secluded corner of nature outside my hometown, I usually felt a strong desire to produce music. Especially when hearing the sounds again at home”. The music could be seen as a further distillation of these moments of reflection spent outside, an attempt to recreate some fleeting moment. The live instrumentation throughout brings another dimension to the work. Andrejs himself plays grand piano and electric piano, we also hear double bass, bowed strings, saxophone and guitar. These elements bring a warm, humane quality to the music and each instrument is played with absolute finesse. One feels that great care has been taken to allow breathing space for every new moment that unfolds. No matter if it’s a piano note or a field recording, each is savoured and treated with the same respect. Every sound has a purpose without ever seeming contrived. Obviously, Andrejs is a composer and producer to whom the finer details matter a great deal.

The Cray Twins – The Pier

    ,

The Cray Twins are fascinated by how audio systems, electronic and acoustic, are like human systems, and have set out to find the borders areas on this album, regions where things are no longer the same, where sound or the perception of it changes or breaks down. It’s a collabora- tion irregularity, in order to find the edge.

This is also where the image of the The Pier comes from; the pier as the limit of human extent, our furthest outreach onto the depths, after witch the space opens up to the unknown, the unheard.

    Ensemble Economique – In Silhouette

Four panel digipak... "In Silhouette" is unmistakably the product of Brian Pyle, who once again returns as Ensemble Economique. Well over a decade ago, Pyle and his merry band of Starving Weirdos popped onto the scene from out of nowhere. Truth be told, that ‘nowhere’ is Humboldt County, California whose grand mythologies about its marijuana industry dwarfs all others. The Weirdos, not averse to method acting through Humboldt’s prized chemistry, stood an unusual chimera in the world of out-rock and avant-garde practitioners. Electronic-Improv, fuck-all auto-didacticism, and monotone psychedelia. Too feral to be AMM, too electronic to be NNCK, too discordant to be :zoviet*france:. As the Weirdos slowed to halt, Pyle’s restless energy insisted that he go on. Hence Ensemble Economique. Over an impressive catalogue of albums, he steadfastly continues down this rabbithole, polishing and refining his craft into a signature polyglot of expressionist collage.

Paco Sala – The Silent Season

After the release of last autumn's 6 track "Ko Yo" 12'' on Denovali, Paco Sala return with a fifth full length album, their first since 2015.  The Silent Season is the net result of a full tibiofemoral dislocation, a lot of surgery, a lot of really heavy drugs, a seemingly open-ended period of housebound isolation & a subsequent hazy regression to roots and influences. The Silent Season is a fever-dream, embodying the period of physical stasis & marking a shift from the outsider pop structures of previous releases. Here instead the duo employ delirious, morphing synth structures intertwined with semi-lucid samples and haunting vocals. All tracks were recorded in improvised sessions over the course of January 2016, before being shared for finishing touches in Berlin. Tracks are presented inclusive of the players' errors, recording mistakes & creative decisions made without reference to consequence.

Four panel digital... After his highly acclaimed 'A Requiem For Edward Snowden' LP, Matthew Collings returns with a collaboration with Swedish sound artist Dag Rosenqvist. Baker / Brentnall – Delirious Things

Limited edition of 175. Housed in a double-panel, hand-screen-printed card sleeve with two card inserts... Delirious Things is an exploration of Aidan Baker's interest in 80s-influenced cold-wave, shoegaze, and synth-pop from such recording artists as Factory Records' Durutti Column, Joy Division, and Section 25 and 4AD's Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil. Combining song-oriented tracks with abstract interludes, the primary instrument on Delirious Things is a 1980s Casio synthesizer, rather than Baker's usual guitar, though the synth is processed through his usual guitar effect pedals, creating heavy, layered washes of droning synth sounds overlaying electronic rhythms and pulsing bass lines. Baker is joined by guest vocalist Claire Brentnall (Shield Patterns) whose voice is reminiscent of Liz Fraser and Kate Bush but still distinctly her own.

The two tracks were conceived initially as two drone guitar pieces, following that, work was done on the composition and atmosphere of the tracks adding the bass-clarinet, viola, vocals, field recordings and piano. Barnacles – One Single Sound

Gatefold CD with limited edition poster... Bored of working for years on microsounds, crick & crocks, drones and field recordings, Matteo Uggeri launches a new project based on field recordings, drones, crick and crocks, microsounds and ignorant beats. Each of these four tracks is then built using only 1 drone, 1 field recording, 1 sampled drumbeat. Then a lot of effects. Inspired by the letters of Charles Robert Darwin to William Darwin Fox. "I am at work on the second vol. of the Cirripedia, of which creatures I am wonderfully tired: I hate a Barnacle as no man ever did before, not even a Sailor in a slow-sailing ship. My first vol. is out: the only part worth looking at is on the sexes of Ibla & Scalpellum; I hope by next summer to have done with my tedious work."

    Paul Beauchamp – Grey Mornings

    ,
Two years after the release of the critically acclaimed, Pondfire, Paul Beauchamp returns with his second solo album, Grey Mornings. Once again tapping into geographical influence for inspiration, the nine tracks of ambient drones reflect the feelings and emotions experienced during the early hours of grey, foggy mornings in both the Piedmont region of Beauchamp’s birthplace in North Carolina and the Piemonte region of Northern Italy where he now resides. Beauchamp continues his research into experimental ambient but at the same time has deviated into new territory moving away from the minimalism of Pondfire through the use of various acoustic and electric instruments, field recordings and incorporating the studio as a creative device in and of itself together with the engineering aid of Julia Kent during the recording process.

Adamennon – Le Nove Ombre del Caos

The album is released on CD in a gatefold cover including a poster of the original movie release... The new solo record from Adamennon expands the paths of his previous MMXII, bringing the ideas and influences of Goblin, Frizzi and Rizzati to a whole new level. Le Nove Ombre del Caos is a (never shot) horror movie which Adamennon wrote the soundtrack to. The atmosphere is drenched in insanity, terror and a malevolent black veil of craziness. The music is heavy, a doom for the doomed, and it gives new lymph to one of the musical genres who made italian composers famous around the world. Think of an overpowered version of Goblin, with drums triggered and rearranged in the most aggressive manner, screams that comes from the deepest womb and ancient spells.

    Orphax – 2.20

With this album Orphax further explores the various possibilities of drone music. For this work, inspired by the work Vice Versa… by Eliane Radigue, he recorded two works using almost the same settings in the virtual modular software Audiomulch, except for changing one small setting. The recorded source material was than used as building blocks in reaper to create two compositions of exactly 20 minutes. These two compositions can be played separate from each other, but the idea is also the create your own mixes with this. This can be playing the compositions at the exact same time, but also in any other way you seem them fit to mix. For this purpose the album comes with download code containing the two compositions and one bonus track which is already one mix you could also duplicate yourself. All music was recorded between June 7th and July 17th, 2016 with AudioMulch and Reaper.

    Alvear / Bondi / D’Incise / Thut

The first category refers to white noise which never occurs in its purity since the actual environment always colours a white noise. for this reason I decided to label it ‘a faintly coloured noise‘. the ‚0‘ number reflects the character of an average sonic material without any distinct feature. going from 0 to 1 is a fundamental step in determining further a sound. for me this step reflects the cultural achievement of building tools to produce sound and makes a cut into the sum of all noise. getting on to the next step (2) highlights pitch as the main amount of the sound chosen. these three steps appear in an ever changing structure involving repetitions and change. change occurs as going from one step to another and as turns of the order as well. The score of abc, 1-6‘ unifies the performers’ activities through the applying of a similar structure. the six pages enable six rounds to go through the described steps at individual paces and leave it up to the performers whether to merge the sounds or to let them happen as single sounds. the relational aspect among the three parts become apparent after a certain time of performing / listening. Martijn Comes – Interrogation Of The Crystalline Sublime

2 x CD housed in 6 panel cover... hear atmospheres, sound shapes, gestural narratives, spectral trajectories, stochastic rhythms and phasic space when I encounter an environment rich in sonic phenomena. But in order to be open to this meta-sensory information, I must first get my ears out of the way. I don’t listen with my ears but with an inner sensory apparatus, what Goethe called “organs of perception,” that I have developed over the years. Once opened to this world sound becomes something very different—it’s as if one could previously only see in black and white and suddenly were able to see in color. One becomes a witness to a full range of qualities and events that were previously inaccessible. The drone is not a steady-state sound but a constellation of sound objects that lie hidden beneath a simple surface. The listener can penetrate this surface when they allow time to exist in a space where the past and future collapse into an infinitesimal, yet infinite, moment. -  Kim Cascone / San Francisco, Nov 20 2015

    Keith Berry – Elixir

The alchemist Jim Haynes said of his work: “like falling snow, his dreamy work drifts with a poetic chill and tranquil hypnosis through which peripheral elements tease the listener with subtle details. it’s so damn beautiful…” A bit of background on this release: one of the great inspirations for invisible birds was Bernhard Günter and his seminal label trente oiseaux. the releases had an enormous influence and one of the gems was Keith Berry’s The Golden Boat. It was with much pleasure when Mr. Berry wrote asking invisible birds to release his newest work Elixir, and after listening to the wonderful kosmic washes of sound, there was no question than to proceed. Mason / McLaughlin – On The Brink

'Failure, or perhaps more accurately, the possibility of failure, provides one with unique perspective. better to cash out, or to ramp up right to the edge of possibility and chance? on the brink is our first true collaboration – we traveled together with the wind on our faces, holes in our shoes and short that one layer that can provide the necessary comforts we tend to rely upon. raw nerves, biting hunger and a drive to see the unknown corners kept us moving forward. we can offer these markers and surveys as proof of our trip and as evidence of what lies slightly beyond our immediate purview but with a combined effort – within reach.' - Nathan Mc Laughlin & Josh Mason
