Kyle Bobby Dunn / Wayne Robert Thomas – The Searchers / Voyevoda

"Widescreen scenes are reflected in the music like a sunspot’s glinting corona, and the lighter, brighter approach steps away from the past’s melancholic achings and soul-deep exhaustions. The dusty backdrop is a major influence on the thoughts and actions of those who live out here, a case of the very environment sinking into the gelatinous bones of the drone. The dry, leathery drone produces a cacophonic chorus, a meaty, glimmering and abrasive texture baked in the sun." - Fluid-Radio "Dunn continues his exploration of the interplay between form and formlessness by conjuring impressionistic images of the American West. Dunn’s gift as a composer is his ability to dive, like an underwater photographer, into the depths of human feeling and return to the surface with snapshots of aspects of the Self which lurk far below the cognitive level of the mind." - Delusions of Adequacy "Ringing, sustained notes, somehow sourced from an old guitar yet sounding more like the slowly ascending celestial horn section of an orchestra tuning up to the vibrations of the universe, or the cries of hundreds of Geese heard from across thousands of feet of open, reverberating water, begin to blur together over time like the broad brush strokes of memory." - Stone in Focus

Carefully mastered by George Mastrokostas (aka Absent Without Leave), Anything Is Possible is a wonderful album, highly recommended for devotees of Fennesz, Eluvium, Benoît Pioulard and Tim Hecker.

    Amuleto – Acre

Amuleto is Francesco Dillon (cello, prepared cello, feedbacks, other strings, objects) and Riccardo Wanke (guitars, keyboards, electronics, synths, harmonium). The duo takes its name from Roberto Bolaño’s novel and seeks to trace invisible links among distant geographical and cultural spaces, words and sounds. Good part of the inspiration comes from literature, sounds, images coming from various sides of the world. Amuleto's music emerges as a combination between contemporary, experimental and electronic music with influences of folk and classical traditions and improvisation. Amuleto’s first release “11h15 local weather forecast” (Die Schachtel, 2010) has received positive reviews from international specialized press (BlowUp, The Wire, Vital Weekly). In 2015, the duo published an extended project (over 2h of music, 2CD, postcards, texts and photos) entitled “No para siempre en la tierra sólo un poco aquí” . The record has been selected as the best releases of the year by the Italian magazines Solar Ipse and Blow Up and reissued in 2017.

    Federico Dal Pozzo – Untitled_VNZ

“Untitled_VNZ” is an acousmatic concert dedicated to Venice and its sound. A sound that vibrates of water, stone, re, metal , all of which in a continuous movement of sensorial and mnemonic evolution. Time becomes water that collects re exes of our hearing and later absorbing to design a story of echo in new notions of forms. An orchestrated composition from the city's topology, a city that makes one think of music papers in a continuously played music: the scores come together like sea waves, the pentagram bars are canals with its numerous “legato” of bridges, of high churches windows, and let's not forget the violins on the edge on the gondolas. Its Music is bigger than the orchestra, and there is no hand big enough to ip the score sheet.

    Fallen – Glimpses

Black / silver cdr in folded card sleeve with grey paper folded and printed insert. Black 'obi' style strip with silver hand written artist label. Comes in a stamped, sealed envelope and plastic film outer sleeve... I composed and recorded “glimpses” at night (for the most part) feeling really calm and serene whilst recording the pieces because of the absolute silence, because of the cold outside the windows, because of the rain outdoors. “glimpses” tries to explore human emotions and feelings, acting like a cold heartless person, or like an empathetic one, or feeling very angry or totally at peace with the rest of the world. “glimpses” is having coffee at night, “glimpses” is crying gently while thinking of a dear childhood memory, “glimpses” is listening to your loved one’s breath while sleeping in the bed near to you. All this happened while I was recording in silence, while my heart was quietly beating...

    Blackfilm – Zero One Seven

On "Zero One Seven", Blackfilm merges tracks spanning across drum and bass, dub and electronic. The sounds on the album are built from the ideas on the original Blackfilm "S/T“ and "Along the Corridors“ and progress to a sound built on new ground mixing modern production techniques and influences while at times referencing the Blackfilm sound we know from his previous releases. The album maintains a consistent focus on atmospherics, beats and heavy bass ranging from darker dub and drum and bass influences to vocal tracks and complex ambient soundscapes. Production wise, the familiar Blackfilm style incorporating the use of synthetic sounds mixed with samples enables the album to create an intriguing, shifting atmosphere as the album progresses. A dystopian journey through haunting vocals, hypnotic drum patterns and complex sound design.

Ensemble Economique – Radiate Through You

The latest long-player of devotional noir by Humboldt County romantic Brian Pyle aka Ensemble Economique was originally titled Music Saves Lives, in response to the misguided backlash directed at underground artists in the wake of the tragic Ghost Ship fire in Oakland. Since Pyle’s career threads through a decade and a half of Northern California’s independent experimental music community, the blow struck a uniquely deep and personal chord. As a way to process, he began recording at his coastal home studio in Manila, California, channeling inner states of mind, seeking something “more personal and intimate, the idea of love, and shining through.” Radiate Through You delivers on its title, exuding a nuanced catharsis, alternately tempestuous and transcendent, forlorn but undefeated. Vaulted heavens of interwoven electronics ebb into hushed dirges of skeletal percussion and candlelit guitar. Roiling noise seethes, swells, and subsides as an ashen string arrangement rises in the mix, keening a somber, circular elegy, as if overtaken by memory on a long walk alone. Two key guest appearances lend the album even more dynamism and drama: the first by Barcelona synthesist Alexander Molero on the questing, celestial opener, “Music Is Life,” the second by New Zealand psychic sisters Purple Pilgrims on the devastating finale, “Blue Hour.” Both showcase impressive shades of Pyle’s finesse as producer and muse, sparking his collaborators to new heights. Whether taken as expressionist memorial, therapeutic song cycle, or something more ambiguous, Radiate Through You stands as a pensive, passionate statement by an enduring light of the West Coast canon, drawn from “a deep, special place of giant emotions, feelings.”

Alaskan Tapes – You Were Always An Island

    ,
You Were Always An Island opens with a downpour of rain. Staring out at its constant fall, listeners can only wait for it to stop. The music’s already waiting: for someone, and for a moment that will never arrive… Alaskan Tapes aids in the clear-up operation, helping to cleanse the air if not the growing solitude. Quiet drones and sullen strings dispel the rain, but it lingers in the streets, overflowing around the mouth of its gutter. The music has been invaded by a longing which spreads like a tendril of ink in clear water, bruising the atmosphere with its purple, sour colour. An event shakes the soul with the magnitude of an earthquake. In this case, the cruelty of distance and the greater cruelty of war which separates a couple. As a man leaves to fight, his beloved has no other choice but to wait for his return. She sends unanswered prayers. His absence grows longer with every sunset. Unable to wait and growing increasingly anxious, she sets off to look for him, a lighthouse offering a faint lifeline in the gathering gloom, only to sadly learn of his death. The separation is permanent – death us do part.

    Nicola Di Croce – Clinamen

    ,
Heavyweight 12" vinyl, download + handmade artwork book curated by Caterina Gabelli, ltd. 111 copies... The concept of "clinamen" derives from Lucretius's "On the Nature of the Universe", and describes the swerve of the atoms from their original straight course. Such deviation generates collisions, and allows changes in the relationship between elements. By using the metaphor of clinamen, the album narrates the process of inventing by diverting from any usual methodology, thus encountering unpredictable solutions. The music combines different commissioned sound works together with field recordings from various mediterranean cities, and the unique timbre of Gabriele Mitelli's trumpet.

Kate Carr – I Ended Out Moving To Brixton

A soundscape reveals a lot about a place, through its presences, its silences, its rhythms and its pauses. A soundscape is forever being made by us all. It stitches us together in ways both subtle and sometimes overwhelming. I think in both its openness and fragility the soundscape can reveal something about the process of community making, and its sensitivity to change offers both opportunities and risks. Compilation of Iranian experimental music

Faced with the task of writing about artists from Iran it is tempting to oversimplify and go with the easiest way to address them -- the way most western media has always treated art coming not just from Iran but from middle east in general. This approach places artists exclusively within the political context presented by the mainstream media, and only shows you the day-to-day politics of governments in the region. This biased approach means artists' works are only interpreted in relation to a reduced conception of the political context. By seeing things this way you only have a handful of artists addressing certain issues with enough exaggeration to be newsworthy.

Michael Vallera – All Perfect Days

On All Perfect Days, Michael Vallera’s second LP for Denovali, he continues to distill his singular, cinematic approach to sound. Acting as both performer and producer, Vallera constructs a lush, deeply emotional album that jettisons the overt rhythms and explicit drum programming that characterized much of his earlier work. Instead, in its tightly focused reliance on little more than guitar and amplifier feedback, supplemented by piano and synthesizer, the album explores a sparse but rich palette that evokes the ambient works of Harold Budd—although filtered through Vallera’s own sharp-edged sensibility. Recorded with Greg Norman at Electrical Audio and mastered by Daniel Rejmer, All Perfect Days adds to the mounting evidence that Michael Vallera is among the most assured and compelling artists to emerge from Chicago in recent years. Michael Vallera is a musician and photographer who lives and works in Chicago. Prolific as both a solo artist and collaborator, he has released albums under his own name and as COIN (Opal Tapes), with percussionist Steven Hess as Cleared (Immune Recordings), and with Joseph Clayton Mills as Maar (Umor Rex, Entr’acte). He sings and plays guitar in the experimental rock group Luggage (Don Giovanni Records). An MFA graduate of School of the Art Institute of Chicago, his work has been exhibited in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and elsewhere.

Sankt Otten – Zwischen Demut und Disco

The duo Sankt Otten from Osnabrueck (Germany), founded in 1999 and consisting of Stephan Otten and Oliver Klemm, releases music on Denovali since 2009. After Männerfreundschaften und Metaphysik (2016), a collaboration record with experimental guitarist „N“, Sankt Otten finally release their first new album since Engtanz Depression (2015). Their new record starts with Das endgültige Scheitern der Melancholie (en.: the final failure of melancholy), which seems to be unfamiliar due to its euphoric mood, but also shows that Sankt Otten consequently develop their music in a sovereign way. The title track Zwischen Demut und Disco (en.: Between humility and disco) then particularly brings to the fore the duo’s admiration of analog synthesizers - timeless instrumental music without nostalgic flashbacks to the past. Warm electronica, human being and machine hand in hand, infused by an almost danceable beat who induces head-nodding.

With allusions to dark-pop and classic broken-folk, the reverb drenched instrumentation, metaphorical fairytale lyrics, and anti-climactic compositions remind us that Alicia Merz is a singer songwriter for people who don't like singer songwriters. After four years of silence, Merz returns with the fourth full length 'The Death of Our Invention'.
