Jason Calhoun – Introduction To An Apology

Limited to 100 copies: LP with 2-sided colour insert... The hallmark of jason calhoun's music--either under his given name or under the naps alias--is an emotional resonance that allows fragility and perseverance to occupy the same space. Though humble in his approach, calhoun has done something quietly extraordinary in building a body of work that, unlike so much music that seeks to transport you elsewhere, instead asks you to check in with yourself. Recent cassette releases have found him pushing composition lengths to 20 or even 30 minutes; for his first LP, introduction to an apology, he has done the opposite, bringing a sense of concision and focus to this collection of pieces, with every moment material. Those familiar with calhoun's music will recognize the gentle purrs of melody here, the restless hiss of seeking connections, and the evocation of people and places that feels especially meaningful in the context of the pandemic. Some tracks are postcard-like in their brevity and sense of tidings, while others shift the listener into a denser headspace, generously allowing for more sustained reflection. From its yawning opening tones to its final, outstretched moments, this is an album that invites gratitude and grace.

    Ned Milligan – Enter Outside

LP limited to 100 copies: Comes with 2-sided colour insert and liner notes. In recent years, Ned Milligan has pursued composition almost exclusively through chimes and cassette tape. Emphasizing live performance, this music was defined by equal parts improvisation and careful curation. His new LP, Enter Outside, demonstrates the tonal and textural qualities found on those recordings while expanding his palette with the inclusion of a singing drum. The title of this album--which can be interpreted as a directive, suggestion, or invitation--embodies the feel of these pieces and how much the music employs outdoor elements not as a mere backdrop, but as a collaborator. As with Milligan's prior albums on Fluid Audio, Gertrude Tapes, and Florabelle, most of Enter Outside was recorded on a rural porch in Maine with additional processing afterwards. Each track offers a gentle immersion into his environment and gradually encourages it to become yours as well, while the gentle racket of the world hums along. There is a fundamentally bristling beauty to this album's core and its ability to let the listener experience its space as a living thing.

    Josh Mason – Coquina Dose

Comes with a two-sided insert as well as a download code. Includes unlimited streaming of Coquina Dose via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more. Coquina Dose is an album of uncommonly intimate gestures and reflections, many of which are inspired by Josh Mason’s lifelong home of Florida—what it means to live there, other people’s perceptions of it, and its unofficial status a “humidity kingdom.” In evoking this atmosphere, Mason utilizes guitar and tape, which has been so emblematic of his work, but also further engages with new ideas in synthesis, and even the bio-feedback of plants. The processes are fascinating but ultimately secondary to the emotional tenor of the album. It’s remarkable how gentle, reflective, and quivering—really, how alive this music is.

Tropic of Coldness – Maps Of Reason

"Maps of reason" is the new album by the duo Gutman / La Placa, a mature work of rare sensitivity that manages to combine all the nuances of the soul as points of a map that every human being hides inside. A deep and layered album that struck me from the first moment and that continues to affect me with new details that emerge with each listening. There are works that are born perfectly aligned with the creative flow, capable with their inspiring charge of really carrying the listener to far away places. I believe that "Maps of reason" has this inner strength and in a world so overflowing with soulless music it is truly an unexpected gift.

James Murray – Embrace Storms (Vinyl Edition)

James Murray’s new solo work takes the form of two carefully constructed long-form sound collages; twin formations gradually unfolding in continuous, ever-evolving streams of delicately controlled chaos. In Your Head seeks to absorb turbulence opened-eyed while the anticyclonic In Your Heart trusts itself to the winds of change. Calm music for chaotic times. Embrace Storms is the first multi-format split release between Slowcraft and KrysaliSound, two collaborative independent labels based in London and Milan dedicated to presenting beautiful limited editions of minimal, understated and unclassifiable musical works.

John Atkinson / Talya Cooper – Plains

Includes an insert and digital download of the album. ALSO includes a digital download of the original soundtrack of the film Two Plains & A Fancy - a whole other album produced by John Atkinson + Talya Cooper! As an LP, Plains grows out of elements of the film’s original score, but it’s also very much its own thing—a quartet of glimmering, weightless pieces that, free from the need to score certain scenes of certain lengths, unfold and envelope at their own pace. Anchoring the album is the side-long “Chillien”, a delicate, harmonic bloom punctuated by the whirs and clicks of Cooper’s guitar and voice. Atkinson, taking control of the processed elements of composition, allows the b-side sequence to grow more expansive and dynamic with each track, maintaining an unmistakably warm glow. This is ambient music with an appreciable sense of landscape and scale.

    Benjamin Finger – Into Light

Limited edition 12" pressed up by Dublin Vinyl using the new Warmtone pressing machines. With too many projects to mention across a range of skillsets, Benjamin Finger’s latest release sees him put down his writers pen and directors hat to focus on this warm, adventurous and mature release. There are multiple ingredients and influences in evidence across the four pieces as he brings together busy ambience with electro-acoustic and modern classical elements. Recorded and mixed in Oslo, Into Light is a classy meld of analogue synths, guitar and field recordings with vocals by Inga-Lill Farstad and cello by Elling Finnanger Snøfugl. A deliberate symmetry is at play in the albums breakdown into two short pieces followed by two sprawling tracks that build up like a slow movement towards a point of no return.

    Bodies Under The Waterfall

Limited to 40 copies - 12" edition of Bodies Under The Waterfall's first solo release. Pressed on clear vinyl with custom packaging. George Royle returns under his Bodies Under The Waterfall alias with his first solo release. Since making his debut on Forwind’s Angry Ambient Artists Vol.2 split he has sharpened his tools and come up with a set of full blooded headphone fillers with the now constant presence of the personal and political in sharp focus. The daily bludgeon of some of the worst human attributes is alluded to in the opening track ‘Degrade’. It sets the scene for what’s instore with a grainy piece of dark drone that touches on the kind of isolationism being practiced and felt at so many levels on planet earth 2018. ‘Echo Chamber’ follows with an obvious nod to the conversational cul de sacs that have become par for the course in the most acute way in recent times. But that’s not the sole purpose here. There’s uplift and relief too, a sense that a corner could be turned.

Kyle Bobby Dunn / Wayne Robert Thomas – The Searchers / Voyevoda

"Widescreen scenes are reflected in the music like a sunspot’s glinting corona, and the lighter, brighter approach steps away from the past’s melancholic achings and soul-deep exhaustions. The dusty backdrop is a major influence on the thoughts and actions of those who live out here, a case of the very environment sinking into the gelatinous bones of the drone. The dry, leathery drone produces a cacophonic chorus, a meaty, glimmering and abrasive texture baked in the sun." - Fluid-Radio "Dunn continues his exploration of the interplay between form and formlessness by conjuring impressionistic images of the American West. Dunn’s gift as a composer is his ability to dive, like an underwater photographer, into the depths of human feeling and return to the surface with snapshots of aspects of the Self which lurk far below the cognitive level of the mind." - Delusions of Adequacy "Ringing, sustained notes, somehow sourced from an old guitar yet sounding more like the slowly ascending celestial horn section of an orchestra tuning up to the vibrations of the universe, or the cries of hundreds of Geese heard from across thousands of feet of open, reverberating water, begin to blur together over time like the broad brush strokes of memory." - Stone in Focus

    Nicola Di Croce – Clinamen

    ,
Heavyweight 12" vinyl, download + handmade artwork book curated by Caterina Gabelli, ltd. 111 copies... The concept of "clinamen" derives from Lucretius's "On the Nature of the Universe", and describes the swerve of the atoms from their original straight course. Such deviation generates collisions, and allows changes in the relationship between elements. By using the metaphor of clinamen, the album narrates the process of inventing by diverting from any usual methodology, thus encountering unpredictable solutions. The music combines different commissioned sound works together with field recordings from various mediterranean cities, and the unique timbre of Gabriele Mitelli's trumpet.

    Die Tödliche Doris – Sprechpause

In der Pause” (During the Pause) was the title of the last track on the b-side of “ “, the first album by Die Tödliche Doris. “In der Pause” was pause music, as well as the announcement of the interval between their debut album, released in 1982, and the box format project ”Chöre und Soli” that followed in 1983. The original sounds of “In der Pause” survived on a single audio tape dating from 1981. Now, about 35 years later, Chris Dreier and Wolfgang Müller have used the material recorded on the audio tape as the source for five new tracks of pause music. The material on the original audio tape has was reworked using Moog analogue effect modules and Ableton Live. It has been supplemented with archived announcement interludes from radio and television stations, including German stations WDR, NDR and HR, Radio Italy IBF and Radio Kamerun.

White Forest is dedicated to animals including whales, dolphins, coral reefs, sea turtles, as well as cats in the city and birds in the mountains. Along with “Ocean” is the series of Cicada’s work themed with marine and land. “Dolphins Leap” proceeds with different speeds to imitate spinner dolphins and risso’s dolphins. “Used to be Home” portrayed the impact of offshore wind energy caused on white dolphin’s habitat from their point of views. “Whale Family” is about humpback whales caring and raising babies. “White Forest” starts from the dreamy coral reef spawning into their bleaching due to seawater warming. Cicada’s attempts are to describe the relationship between human and its impact on ocean and animals.

    Olli Aarni – Nielu

Mastered by Taylor Deupree. Limited to 150 LPs, comes with a two-sided insert and download code... The quality of Olli Aarni’s music has remained remarkably high given his consistent output over the last five years for labels like Preservation, Cotton Goods, and Dauw. Often working in the cassette format and primarily composing extended, gorgeously textured drones, Aarni’s new album, Nielu, is one of his first releases on vinyl and a kind of culmination of the sound he has crafted for years. Even in the context of such an impressive discography, Nielu is noteworthy and Aarni considers it to be his personal definitive ambient album. The hallmarks of Aarni’s prior work—exceptional attention to texture, ghostly looped figures, enveloping sound fields—are especially immersive on Nielu, which, in his native Finnish, can be translated as “vortex,” “throat,” or “swallowing”—all appropriate imagery here. Taking inspiration from the harsh weather conditions of Fennoscandia, both side-long pieces are enveloping compositions that reward close listening but, even more, invite surrender to wide washes of sound. Evocative and sometimes, bleak, Nielu is fundamentally beautiful and grows more emotionally engaging the louder it is played.

Ned Milligan – Nature Always Needs Improving

This album is limited to 100 copies on black vinyl. Comes with a two-sided insert and download code... Ned Milligan now presents his new album, Nature Always Needs Improving, building on the momentum generated by his admired third LP, Continental Burns. Echoing that album’s mode and structure, Nature Always Needs Improving offers a handful of tender, minimalist pieces before giving way to a spectral side-length conclusion. The deep intimacy of the album is enhanced by its process—primarily recorded outdoors on porches or in yards—and by the unpredictable interaction of incidental sounds with traditionally musical sound sources, especially resonant chimes.

Sontag Shogun + Moskitoo – The Things We Let Fall Apart / The Thunderswan

Pre-order: release date 15.11.17... 'An utterly affectionate and adorable aural apparition, ‘the things we let fall apart’ emerging frosted and fragile, delicately sculptured in thawing ice tones, the symphonics delicately shy eyed and whispered are breathlessly beguiled by a graceful neo classical hush, the effect really is entrancing as it is teasingly brief, sitting somewhere between a very youthful Mum and Smile Down Upon Us. ‘thunderswan’ over on the flip is expressed with the kind of poise and musical poetry that shimmers and twinkles to those early post YMO outings from Ryuichi Sakamoto, its minimal toning sweetly gathering to blossom into caressing cinematic crushes dappled in surrendering sepia hazes, a most exquisite and rarefied thing of bewitching beauty.' - The Sunday Experience (Mark Losing Today)

Cover and postcard photo by Anja Matko “Part of the charm of “Piano Textures 4” is its intimacy and I feel like I am inside the piano at times. It feels like the whole album purposely holds back from going for a full melodic approach though and so some people who are less likely to get lost in mood pieces, may not find what they’re looking for here. Midwife – Like Author, Like Daughter

Black vinyl LP that includes an 11x17 lyric insert. DL code included... Under the name Sister Grotto, Denver based artist Madeline Johnston explores the limits of minimalism in transcendental drone-pop. With "Like Author, Like Daughter", Johnston uses the Midwife moniker to craft triumphant, fist-in-the-air anthems that tackle themes of dislocation and falling in (and out) of love with a person, a home and yourself. "Like Author, Like Daughter" is a portrait of Johnston’s last year as a resident of Denver’s famed D.I.Y venue Rhinoceropolis which closed in a rash of politically motivated assaults on creative spaces across the United States. The album internalizes loss, addiction, abandonment and wrings them through distorted power chords, powerful leads, sheets of drone to create building, aching monuments to past-selves and lost relationships into a positivist statement of resilience and self-love. It’s a record that is impossible to listen to without a lump in your throat.

    Mark Templeton – Gentle Heart

Pre-order: 20 June 2017 Mark Templeton returns with the third instalment in his Heart trilogy. Following on the heels of Scotch Heart (2011) and Jealous Heart (2013), Gentle Heart is a fitting closure to this story, an album filled with bending, yearning phrases - sounds that feel like they are actually speaking to you from another time, as if they’re being piped into the room where you’re listening today. There is a continued use of elements that hearken to tape machines and older technology combined with acoustic instruments and modern studio techniques and sensibilities, squarely centered in the contemporary moment. Loops stumble and fall off their track, then regain their footing, breaking the concentration enough to remind you that someone is here and paying attention. In both structure and emotion, Templeton captures time in a novel way - connecting points that don’t immediately lend themselves to such a connection, deftly balancing qualities that are both haunting and inviting. This music is one of imagined memory, capturing moments that never happened, but could have.

    Benjamin Fingers – Ghost Figures

Limited 300 copies LP 12" Vinyl (incl. album download)... ...are piano pieces recorded over the period of two years. The tracks are a collection of many hours of rehearsing and improvising alone in front of the piano. These sessions were recorded using a field recorder and then later processed and re-worked in the studio. It´s based largely around deceptively repetitive piano movements. Some of the tracks are very stripped down to their essential elements while others have been given a re-brush, adding new sounds beneath, such as cello and different instruments where it seemed fit. The use of various filters and pedals have been used occasionally to manipulate certain parts of the melodies. The idea behind the album was to let go of all kinds of emotions and just try to create an open minded album that could be both warm and melancholic but at the same time dramatic and dark. The album consists of 14 tracks.

Selffish – He She Them Us (Vinyl)

Vinyl edition of He She Them Us. DMM cut pressed on black virgin vinyl, reverse print on sleeve for tactile matt textured finish... He She Them Us is an album of precise, purposeful electronica that recalls and expands upon the output of labels like Mille Plateaux, April Records, raster-noton and City Centre Offices in the early 2000s. The music is not purely electronic though, atop the bursts of static and staccato beats are many layers of field recordings and live instrumentation. The field recordings represent an important anchor point for Andrejs whose work on He She Them Us began at a very turbulent time in his life. Finding solace in the stillness and beauty of the countryside around his home city of Riga, he would record the sounds of these places and return with them to his home studio: “Each time I went to visit a secluded corner of nature outside my hometown, I usually felt a strong desire to produce music. Especially when hearing the sounds again at home”. The music could be seen as a further distillation of these moments of reflection spent outside, an attempt to recreate some fleeting moment.

The hardcover book is cloth bound, 88 pages, 40 drawings, a few words and lots of space. The four track 7" vinyl single accompanying the book, credited to his alias Koyxen Mattsunagnen, takes Matsunaga's music a step further towards a more dance oriented approach, as with his minimal techno project NHK and the recent NHK'Koyxen material released by the PAN label, whilst still clearly and firmly rooted in contemporary, experimental music.

Vlad Dobrovolski – The Drums of the Fore & Aft

I tried to rework sounds from my immediate environments – seas, places where I stayed and everyday life. I was inspired by absence of people in a blue sea. Absence can create silence that is more unsettling than merely contemplative.  I prefer to think about absence rather than silence - absence of sound is much more active, compelling a listener to fill these gaps in. Physically and metaphorically it creates a space for multiple projections.  -  Vlad Dobrovolski

The encounter of Lamanna and Mai is suprisingly far from their usual sound. Their influences coming from techno and jazzcore/metal are both left aside here, in favour of a more nocturnal and atmospheric sound. The use of synthesisers is sober and it’s accompained by long sustained notes from the saxophone. The music is so smokey and dark, It could suit perfectly a b/w crime movie shot in one metropolitan suburb.

"The Way of the Samurai is found in death. Meditation on inevitable death should be performed daily. Every day when one's body and mind are at peace, one should meditate upon being ripped apart by arrows, rifles, spears and swords, being carried away by surging waves, being thrown into the midst of a great fire, being struck by lightning, being shaken to death by a great earthquake, falling from thousand-foot cliffs, dying of disease or committing seppuku at the death of one's master. And every day without fail one should consider himself as dead. This is the substance of the way of the samurai."

Amklon is a duo from Naples, composed of Giuseppe Mascia (electronics) and Sergio Albano (Aluminum guitar). Their music is the point of meeting of so many seemingly irreconcilable worlds: an architecture of dark synthetic sounds and avant-gard noise floating on atmospheric textures and confessional voices. The result is a complex system of unusual forms, which barely contains a substance made of organic and nonorganic sounds. The guitar sources are treated through the electronics, creating a continuos flow of tension and movement. It’s a desertic and gloomy experience, a descent into the dark corners of sound.
