    Wil Bolton – Cumulus Sketches

Cumulus Sketches is immediately expansive, with spread-out, immersive melodies and an oriental atmosphere. In general, the music is tranquil, restorative, and healthy, and the tracks are given time to properly develop, feeling more like fully-grown pieces and less like the sketches of its title. The blurred effect of reverb only adds to the dream, making Cumulus Sketches the perfect soundtrack for cloud gazing.

James Murray & Mike Lazarev – Suññatā

Following last year's reworking of ‘Living Treasure’ James Murray and Mike Lazarev present a collection of post-classical compositions woven into delicate ambient textures. Suññatā is the experience of encountering the non-self, of a sound and its reflection meeting in empty space, found here in the remarkable combined resonance of emotive piano and uniquely reactive sound design.

    Anthéne – Collide

The focus on melodic and harmonic development is strong and distinguishes anthéne from many a modern ambient musician, but developments are still allowed space and room, so the music never feels cluttered or rushed. Instead, Collide feels sparse and clean, gleaming with icicle-like tones.

    Silent Vigils – Wake

After the deep monochromatic textures of 'Fieldem' and the gradually evolving impressions of hope in 'Lost Rites’ we now conclude the Silent Vigils trilogy of albums for Home Normal with ‘Wake’, an exceptional celebration of new life and boundless spirit. With Małgorzata Łapsa-Malawska once again providing her singular visual counterpoint, Stijn Hüwels and James Murray's three vigils arrive now at their perfectly formed conclusion, offering an uplifting and timely salve for these troubled times.

    Chronovalve – Light

'Light' is the long-awaited follow-up to Chronovalve's Home Normal debut 'Trace of Light'. Released in 2013, the album was met with critical acclaim and 'Light' continues this work with positivity of spirit and open-hearted ambient refrains. 'Even in the most ordinary moments of life, one can get a feeling that there is an inspiration, a light trying to reach through to us. A person, a place, a sound or a song might unexpectedly open us to that light. These songs are inspired by, and explore that experience…that hope… that possibility...' - Mike Engebretson (Chronovalve)

    Martina Claussen – Verwoben

acked with movement and dynamics, Verwoben swerves between the apparent, abstract and engagingly abstruse via pensive electronics, contemporary rumblings and harsher sections all swirling around the home base of Martina’s voice, that always lends the album a warmth even as the sound moves further and further out into more shadowy and desolate spaces.

The Cray Twins – In The Company Of Architects

For In the Company of Architects, their second album, The Cray Twins’ Paul Baran and Gordon Kennedy has assembled a virtual collective of musicians and sound artists, collaborating with only selective access to the contributions of others, and to the whole. The core duo of The Cray Twins take on the role of directors, composers and assemblers, in the process amplifying not only the performance of the collective, but also natural and artificial interferences, incorporating accidental sound sources encountered when arranging the album.

    Erik Levander – Inåt

The album title 'Inåt', translating 'Inwards', refers to the introspectiveness of the compositions, drawing inspiration from personal struggles in everyday life. The track titles and music cycles point to another layer of context with the ongoing pattern in politics, and of people turning inward, being somewhat inescapable. A more synth heavy release than 2018's 'Couesnon', Inåt still features a vibrant blend of digital, analog and acoustic sounds. The clarinet is present at times, but also traces of other acoustic sources, all put through their paces with everything from guitar pedals to digital processing utilised, as Erik twists them into some wonderful tones, trails and timbres.

Seasons (pre-din) – Distortion Of The Cell

The latest addition to the mysterious Mancunian’s catalogue is a varied release that takes in several stylistic approaches while remaining a coherent listen. Roughly half the album is focused on a meld of post-punk and dingy club influenced beats propelling the atmospherics that range from warm and engaging to full throttle and abrasive. The beatless interludes and final stretch take in some more restrained ambience as well as some searing efforts in that cross section between drone and the warmer end of the noise spectrum. There's a thematic and musical twisting of the lines that hints at a corruption at source and of self, and if you're in a good mood an eventual dissolution in the soaring static.

Hipnotic Earth – Suspended In Silence

Hipnotic Earth is an electro-acoustic ambient soundscape project birthed from a deep need for quiet, slow motion music; from a carnal urge toward silence. California, USA based artist Cosmos Rennert’s project began dramatically when in 2015 the scheduled release of his debut album ‘Essence’ was missed when his home in the hot springs of Harbin, Northern California burned down in a sudden wildfire which swept the community. His home, studio, possessions, work place and the tiny town in which he lived succumbed to the flames. He is now deeply grateful to be able to continue recording and we’re pleased to present, a record which sees a departure from Cosmos’ usual style of sleepy drones.

    Jens Pauly – Vihne

Floating through empty streets late at night. No other people around, no distraction from a dialogue happening inside of you - looking for something, looking for nothing, looking for anything relevant. Jens Pauly's second album ‘Vihne’ is the soundtrack to a search between flickering lights and a cloudy sky, between emptiness and being alive. It asks the essential questions within us, in a tranquil state neither here nor there. Each track marks a microcosm of its own, a small journey through worlds engulfed in memories.

Arovane & Mike Lazarev – Aeon

"In December of 2017, Uwe and I started working on a project developing a particular musical language in exchange of thematic ideas. In my London studio, I would record minimal piano pieces, often late at night, sometimes with the windows open, to capture every sound resonating from the instrument. Uwe would deconstruct these compositions even further, extracting the brush of my fingers, the fall of the hammers, the breath of the strings. We both aspired to delve into this instrument and play with all of the sounds living within, as heard from the inside. Many ideas would come from Uwe in the form of a sketch, an aural vocabulary, or a sonic brochure, which I would interpret through a pair of closely placed microphones. There are even fewer melodies and even more spacial pianism on here than in my previous solo reductionist works, which Uwe so masterfully extracted with his experienced ear. In this incredible partnership, we have discovered a new dimension within the piano, which we are honoured to share with you" - Mike Lazarev

    Michael Cutting – Luft

LUFT is the second solo release of Salford-based tape musician Michael Cutting. Continuing his experiments with reel-to-reel recorders, LUFT revels in the imperfections of degrading tape, faltering machines and roughly spliced loops to conjure an intimate yet visceral sonic landscape peppered with tape flutter, crackles and unsteady self-replications. At the centre is the dusty wheezing of a 19th Century organ, with the clicking of its rusty bellows providing much of the music’s rhythmic impetus while its piercing reeds underpin a gently microtonal harmonic language. Complemented at different times by an e-bowed violin, fender rhodes, clarinet, trumpet, sine tone generator and voice, the album’s seven tracks evoke a quiet, imagined journey, a journey both personal and geographical.

    Otto Solange – шон

"I’ve decided in 2019 to release some of the pieces of works recorded from 2013 to 2015 to let an imprint from this period and give a life to an other side of my sound works, more unknown by people who follow my other sounds projects. I've travelled a lot at this time and also, this period was precisely at the middle of a great change in my life. My son was born at the end of 2015 and a big part of these works have been recorded for him, with probably some memories from my previous journeys around the world." "All have been composed and recorded at home with a set of many electronic hardwares and no laptop (samplers, effects and loops). Using some various samples from my music collection library as a collage process and some other sounds have been recorded from a part of my solo instruments and electronics machines."

    Andrew Tasselmyer – Surface Textures

Surface Textures is the fourth solo album by Andrew Tasselmyer and was created with field recordings captured in Japan, China, Europe, and the USA from August 2017 to May 2018. The album is a soundtrack to specific, ordinary experiences that somehow became permanently lodged in my memory of those places. It is an album focused on painting a picture of unnoticed corners of the world, and a reminder that sometimes, the greatest satisfaction is found by looking past the immediate and into the peripheral textures of a place.

James Murray’s new solo work takes the form of two carefully constructed long-form sound collages; twin formations gradually unfolding in continuous, ever-evolving streams of delicately controlled chaos. I also explored recording techniques emphasising the sound resulting from the mechanics of the piano and my fingers on the keyboard. These sounds are rarely acoustically audible, but add an intimate and intriguing aspect to the recording.”

Arrow is a piano album – the sound of Hebden Bridge on a Saturday afternoon, embellished with wisps of Glasgow. Recorded especially for Preserved Sound in Hebden Bridge, "Arrow" is sound of Richard Youngs alone at the piano, embellished with light drums and an old organ. This collection of solo improvisations is all about capturing the moment – that piano and that afternoon in Hebden Bridge. “I sat down at the piano and just played,” says Richard. “No preconceptions, nothing worked out. I wasn't trying to achieve anything other than to enjoy playing the piano. There was also an organ in the room, so there are touches of that. I then took these back to Glasgow and knocked it into shape – a few overdubs, nothing drastic.”

    Banabila & Machinefabriek – Entropia

Michel Banabila and Rutger Zuydervelt (aka Machinefabriek) have been collaborating since 2012. Although they both reside in Rotterdam, they (besides coming together for coffee) prefer to use the old file-swap-way of working. With each album, sounds and song drafts are frantically sent back and forth, in a short but super intense timespan of a week or two. This spontaneity is clearly audible throughout their music, with each album having its own distinct character. After the tight, post fourth world of 'Macrocosms', their fifth album 'Entropia' veers into much rougher terrain, adding distorted field recordings, bursting noise, nasty jump cuts and an overal sense of chaotic abstraction to the mix. 'Entropia' is definitely one of their more challenging efforts, an adventurous yet coherent sonic journey.

    Dramavinile – Silfra

Since 2016, dramavinile (Vincenzo Nava) attempts to match and combine lo-fi, electroacoustic, field recordings and abstract ambient. His fourth releases since 2016, "Silfra", is the name of a fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates in Thingvellir National Park. The rift was formed in 1789 by the earthquakes accompanying the divergent movement of the two tectonic plates. The water is filtered through porous underground lava for 30-100 years before reaching the spring that feeds into Silfra. The water is therefore extremely pure by the time it reaches the north end of Thingvellir lake and it allows for underwater visibility of over 100 meters in Silfra. The glacial meltwater remains very cold in Silfra, but as fresh water is constantly filling the fissure, the water never freezes and remains 2°C – 4°C year round. Silfra is said to have the clearest water in the world.

    Bruno Sanfilippo – Pianette

'Pianette' consists of a collection of solo piano compositions inspired by dreams and the bucolic fantasy of mechanical toys, the dolls, the essence of the circus and the puppets. "Pianette is one again a milestone in the music genre" Gezeitenstrom Musik "Bruno Sanfilippo has made my favourite work of his with ‘Pianette’. It’s unashamedly new-classical in its composition, eerie with its tense production and melodic dissonance and oh so subtle in how it uses the piano to create mechanical life. The piano is easily one of the most expressive instruments on Earth, so playing these two ideas off against each other has created an inspired album of muted greatness" by Simon Smith · Higher Plain Music

    Enofa – Arboretum

This is the hand made “standard” CD version of Arboretum in an edition of 50 copies. These come in hand stamped and altered black digipaks, each with a factory pressed disc. Each copy comes with a dried leaf, and is banded with a vintage arboreal obi strip. For Enofa, nature, and the inspiration derived from walking among the trees in the park and nature preserve near his home, plays a large part in the overall tone of this one long beautiful track. Like the Arboreta, which are regularly crafted to contain a range of contrasting shapes and colours, which gives them a very unique look and atmosphere, this wondrous soundscape of sorts, incorporating field recordings, moody guitars and synth, and electronic treatments perfectly reflects the calming and mysterious feel of the long and languid glorious English days of the moment. Wind chimes…the crackle of leaves underfoot….the light, swirling wind in the treetops…the sun breaking through the clouds…put this album on and you will find yourself strolling there as well!

A sound that vibrates of water, stone, re, metal , all of which in a continuous movement of sensorial and mnemonic evolution. Time becomes water that collects re exes of our hearing and later absorbing to design a story of echo in new notions of forms. An orchestrated composition from the city's topology, a city that makes one think of music papers in a continuously played music: the scores come together like sea waves, the pentagram bars are canals with its numerous “legato” of bridges, of high churches windows, and let's not forget the violins on the edge on the gondolas. Its Music is bigger than the orchestra, and there is no hand big enough to ip the score sheet.

I composed and recorded “glimpses” at night (for the most part) feeling really calm and serene whilst recording the pieces because of the absolute silence, because of the cold outside the windows, because of the rain outdoors. “glimpses” tries to explore human emotions and feelings, acting like a cold heartless person, or like an empathetic one, or feeling very angry or totally at peace with the rest of the world. “glimpses” is having coffee at night, “glimpses” is crying gently while thinking of a dear childhood memory, “glimpses” is listening to your loved one’s breath while sleeping in the bed near to you. Blackfilm – Zero One Seven

On "Zero One Seven", Blackfilm merges tracks spanning across drum and bass, dub and electronic. The sounds on the album are built from the ideas on the original Blackfilm "S/T“ and "Along the Corridors“ and progress to a sound built on new ground mixing modern production techniques and influences while at times referencing the Blackfilm sound we know from his previous releases. The album maintains a consistent focus on atmospherics, beats and heavy bass ranging from darker dub and drum and bass influences to vocal tracks and complex ambient soundscapes. Production wise, the familiar Blackfilm style incorporating the use of synthetic sounds mixed with samples enables the album to create an intriguing, shifting atmosphere as the album progresses. A dystopian journey through haunting vocals, hypnotic drum patterns and complex sound design.

Ensemble Economique – Radiate Through You

The latest long-player of devotional noir by Humboldt County romantic Brian Pyle aka Ensemble Economique was originally titled Music Saves Lives, in response to the misguided backlash directed at underground artists in the wake of the tragic Ghost Ship fire in Oakland. Since Pyle’s career threads through a decade and a half of Northern California’s independent experimental music community, the blow struck a uniquely deep and personal chord. As a way to process, he began recording at his coastal home studio in Manila, California, channeling inner states of mind, seeking something “more personal and intimate, the idea of love, and shining through.” Radiate Through You delivers on its title, exuding a nuanced catharsis, alternately tempestuous and transcendent, forlorn but undefeated. Vaulted heavens of interwoven electronics ebb into hushed dirges of skeletal percussion and candlelit guitar. Roiling noise seethes, swells, and subsides as an ashen string arrangement rises in the mix, keening a somber, circular elegy, as if overtaken by memory on a long walk alone. Two key guest appearances lend the album even more dynamism and drama: the first by Barcelona synthesist Alexander Molero on the questing, celestial opener, “Music Is Life,” the second by New Zealand psychic sisters Purple Pilgrims on the devastating finale, “Blue Hour.” Both showcase impressive shades of Pyle’s finesse as producer and muse, sparking his collaborators to new heights. Whether taken as expressionist memorial, therapeutic song cycle, or something more ambiguous, Radiate Through You stands as a pensive, passionate statement by an enduring light of the West Coast canon, drawn from “a deep, special place of giant emotions, feelings.”

Alaskan Tapes – You Were Always An Island

    ,
You Were Always An Island opens with a downpour of rain. Staring out at its constant fall, listeners can only wait for it to stop. The music’s already waiting: for someone, and for a moment that will never arrive… Alaskan Tapes aids in the clear-up operation, helping to cleanse the air if not the growing solitude. Quiet drones and sullen strings dispel the rain, but it lingers in the streets, overflowing around the mouth of its gutter. The music has been invaded by a longing which spreads like a tendril of ink in clear water, bruising the atmosphere with its purple, sour colour. An event shakes the soul with the magnitude of an earthquake. In this case, the cruelty of distance and the greater cruelty of war which separates a couple. As a man leaves to fight, his beloved has no other choice but to wait for his return. She sends unanswered prayers. His absence grows longer with every sunset. Unable to wait and growing increasingly anxious, she sets off to look for him, a lighthouse offering a faint lifeline in the gathering gloom, only to sadly learn of his death. The separation is permanent – death us do part.
